Like most college students, University of Rhode Island Rams are excited for spring break, Thanksgiving break, and just about any excuse to have off from school. Most students will travel home during breaks, but some will choose to travel with their friends. At URI, students usually travel to Mexico for spring break or even Florida (if they’re over 21). Whatever the destination may be, traveling during breaks seems to be a must. In addition to the destination, transportation is just as important. Please be reminded that URI is in the middle of nowhere and is sometimes a hassle to travel to and from. This is true for a lot of universities therefore planning ahead of time is really important. There’s nothing worse than getting stuck with a horrible seat or even traveling at an unreasonable time because you waited too long to book your traveling arrangements.

This spring break, students will be traveling to Mexico (most likely) with other college students. This includes students from URI, but also from 10-20 other colleges and universities. From personal experience, if you have not had the opportunity to go on one of these spring break trips…DO IT! You won’t ever get the chance to sit by the beach with hundreds of other college students, soak up the sun, and drink yourself into a week of unforgettable memories. It’s not always fun and games, but if you go with a good group of people and are there to enjoy yourself (be prepared to get five hours of sleep total), you’ll have a blast.

There is also an alternative spring break option for most students at colleges and universities, which I do not think is taken advantage of. Sometimes programs like Habitat for Humanity host alternative spring breaks where they bring groups of students to areas around the United States and build homes and/or schools for underprivileged families and communities. I think this traveling option is productive and a great way to get involved in and around the community. Besides, if you choose to travel somewhere else in the US, you won’t technically be going home. Isn’t that what school vacations are all about?

For other students who are just traveling home for breaks, make sure you purchase your plane, train, or bus tickets in advance. I’ve heard of people waiting until the last minute to purchase tickets and they’ve either missed out on going home or have had to pay a ridiculous amount of money just to get home. Know your exam/work schedule well in advanced in order to book your tickets. Luckily for us Rhody Rams, the Amtrak is a five minute drive from campus. These trains go to just about anywhere and are a convenient way to travel home. Public buses area also available on campus and travel to the city of Providence multiple times a day. The best piece of advice I have for students trying to travel home during breaks, is to book their tickets and reservations a few weeks or even months ahead!

Traveling while your in college is a great time to explore and learn about yourself and others. As much as I encourage people to study abroad, if some are unable to, traveling during school vacations is a great idea. We are lucky enough to have breaks that range from two weeks to five weeks during Christmas time, therefore we must take advantage of it all. Whether its going to Florida and having some fun at pool parties or going to Cancun with the rest of your university, traveling during breaks is a great idea and should be enjoyed by all college students!

Whether or not you’ve decide to choose your roommates or go into your housing situation at school blindly, roommate stories are inevitable. Putting multiple guys, let alone ladies into a small room is a recipe for disaster, which is why I’ve put together the most common roommate nightmares for a college student at the University of Rhode Island.

My roommate is stealing my things: First off, if you know for a fact that your roommate is stealing your things tell your RA (Residential Assistant). They’re there to help mediate any situation, especially one that involves theft. If you are unsure that your roommate is stealing your food, clothes, and other belongings, simply ask them. There’s no point in trying to be Inspector Gadget and set up traps for them to fall into. Be honest and ask them upfront. They may have come home one night and have wanted some food to munch on and your pizza bagels were looking pretty good. Your roommate could have even forgotten that they took your food or favorite shirt. Don’t assume, just ask!

My roommate is always bringing guys/girls home: Don’t get on your roommates the case the first couple of times that this happens. It’s college and maybe they’re just trying to have a good time. My advice is that once this becomes a usual weekend scenario for you, bring it up to their attention. Maybe they haven’t realized that it makes you feel uncomfortable to hear them having sexual intercourse at 3AM or maybe they just don’t care. Whatever the case may be, if you feel unwelcome in your own room because your roommate is using your bedroom as the smush room, say something!

My roommate comes home drunk every night: If at this point your roommate is not concerned for his/her own well-being, it’s time to bring in the professionals. Getting drunk every so often while you’re at college is completely acceptable, but once partying gets in the way of school and your life, someone need’s to intervene. My advice would be to express your concern for them first, don’t attack them even if they threw up on your carpet! Once you have brought it to their attention, but they continue to do it, bring in your RA or even a few of your mutual friends. Your roommate may not thank you at that moment, but a few months down the road, they’ll thank you for setting them straight.

My roommate is messy: There is absolutely no excuses for a dirty, messy, unorganized human being other than the fact that they were probably not taught any better. Don’t let these bad habits slide because sooner or later you’ll be trying to avoid your room as much as possible and nobody wants that. A few tips to avoid the messy roommate situation may be to schedule a day and time to clean the room together or even assign chores like taking out the garbage or vacuuming the rug. Unless you’re the messy roommate in this situation, do your best to avoid this nightmare from the beginning. No one likes a sloppy incoherent roommate coming home in the middle of the night.

Some students never go through roommate nightmares, but for many these nightmares are all too realistic. Go about any situation with a clear state of mind, but with a goal in mind as well. The room you are sharing is also your property, therefore it should be shared and taken care of like a home. People aren’t always going to agree with your ideal way of living, but it is important to feel welcomed and at home in your dorm room!

We all know how difficult it can be to remain healthy and fit while away at school and students at the University of Rhode Island are no exception to that. Dining halls, late night munchies, and fast food spots surrounding us wherever we go. Although eating has a tremendous impact on how healthy you are, staying active is just as important. Here are some tips on how to avoid the freshmen fifteen, lose the sophomore sixteen, dodge the junior jillion, and shave off the senior seventeen. 

TIP #1: MAKE THE TIME TO WORK OUT
I can’t tell you how many people I know that have used the excuse, “I don’t have the time!” Truth is, we’re all students with social lives and with grades to keep up; none of us have the spare time either. You have to make the time to work out in order to be a healthier you. Even if that means setting your alarm clock an hour early before class or saying no to happy-hour once a week!

TIP #2:DON’T EAT WHEN YOU GET HOME FROM A NIGHT OUT
I know we all enjoy eating a Chicken Parmesan calzone at 3AM from I-Zone, but it’s not doing you any good. Those extra calories are proving to be deadly and will help you gain weight immediately. Instead of ordering food, maybe set a side a snack for when you get home. Believe it or not, a peanut butter and banana sandwich tastes great after a long night out down-the-line.

TIP #3: FIND A WORK OUT PARTNER 
It’s never easy getting yourself to the gym, but when you have another person depending on you, things change. Having a workout buddy can mean the difference between getting a work out in or taking a nap. It’s important to surround yourself with people who have similar goals as you because believe it or not you’ll end up inspiring each other and now you won’t have an excuse because URI has a brand new state of the art fitness center right across from Hope Dining Hall.

TIP #4: TRY NEW THINGS 
Switching up your routine is key in order to see results, but also to keep you interested in your workout. Try out new workout regimes to spice up your daily routines. If you’re not much of a runner, pick a beautiful day (Rhode Island has plenty to choose from) and around alongside the seawall or even through campus. If your a cardio fanatic, get yourself into a weight training class and learn about proper form and technique. The new Anna Fascitelli Fitness studio has a wide range of classes from dance to weight training and even kickboxing. This could really do your body some justice!

TIP #5: GET SOME SLEEP
Believe me, I know it’s difficult to get those 7-8 hours of sleep each night. If you’re not up studying for an exam then you’re probably out and about in Narragansett or maybe your a Netflix series binge watcher. Whatever the case may be, it’s important to sleep when you have the time to because this will help you regain your energy to work out better, focus on your classes, and be an overall happier individual.

TIP #6: HAVE A WELL BALANCED DIETBalanced Diet
Truth is, as college students we are all growing physically and mentally. In order for that growth to peek we must fuel our bodies to the best of our abilities. Yes, I encourage you to eat fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, but I also encourage you to consume protein and fats regularly. I don’t mean a large fries from Burger King when I say fat, but instead try some almonds, peanuts, or avocados. These are all great sources of good fat and are tasty, too. Mix things up and enjoy your fast metabolism while you still got it!

TIP #7: BE KIND TO YOURSELF AND OTHERS
So often college students get caught up in the pressures of school, society, and family. It’s okay to admit that you’re stressed out and to cut back on some of  the responsibilities on your plate. Being kind to yourself also means being honest with how you feel physically and mentally. Take a break once and a while…you deserve it! While you’re at it, don’t forget to be kind to those around you. This will make you happier and more at peace with yourself. Mental health is just as important as physical health, which is why it must be practiced regularly.

Consider these tips when trying to remain healthy and fit at any college or university. Luckily for the students at the University of Rhode Island being active outdoors comes easy because of the cool ocean breeze and wide open space in and around campus. Whatever town or city you are from, these tips can help you become more physically, emotionally, and even sexually healthier. 

Dating 101: URI Edition

For students at the University of Rhode Island, dating, hooking up, and relationships are pretty common. With 15,000 undergrads on one campus it’s no wonder one-night-stands, long-term relationships, and hook ups are happening. What makes our college campus different from others is how approachable students are. More often than not people are friendly making it easier to meet new people.

What is dating like at URI? I couldn’t really give you a general yet accurate explanation of how it works. From what I’ve seen, we’ve got an even split between relationships and hooks-up. More often than not, single Rhody Rams will take advantage of just about any situation to meet those of the opposite sex. From casual encounters in your classrooms to overly intoxicated nights at the bars, there’s always an end goal: to find someone of the opposite sex to share a medium McDonald’s fries with by the end of the night. No really….I don’t think there’s a way to sum up dating at URI because it all depends on who you ask.

I’m single and I like to ‘study’ I have been a witness to a few relationships and hooks up that have sparked from the sharing of interests between two students. It could be their involvement in a club or sport, a course their taking, or a favorite place to just relax. A lot of students at URI will meet during the course of a semester in their classes according to their major. Once you’ve seen someone in one of your classes, the odds are they’ll probably be in another one later on in your college career. Might as well make friends with them, right? After the initial encounter has been overcome, it’s a lot easier for students to transition out of that stage. Ever heard of study buddies and project partners? Well, you’ve just found yourself one that could last a little longer than the actual course does (wink).

Where should I go on my first date? Luckily for you, the University of Rhode Island is located fifteen minutes away from the beach and local restaurants. A walk on the Narragansett Seawall might be a nice start for your date and could transition to dinner at George’s of Galilee. You can never go wrong with seafood, especially the fresh seafood you’ll find in Rhode Island. There’s other possibilities like take a trip to Providence (WARNING: the ride is about 30-minutes so if you’re on a date with someone who isn’t talkative, be prepared for a long and awkward car ride). In Providence you’ll find more to do like arcade games and dinner at Dave and Busters or a walk around the Providence Place Mall. There’s always a lot to do in the heart Rhode Island so you’ll never get bored if you go out on a date there.

Next time you find yourself at the library or in the crowded room of a frat party, look around and introduce yourself to someone. You never know who you may meet; it could be your future Rhody Ram bride or groom or even one-night-stand.

A Stylist’s Guide to the University of Rhode Island

Ever wanted to wear leather leggings but felt like they didn’t reflect your style? How about that pair of pastel colored pants you saw, but thought they were too bright for you? Luckily for college students, going to school is a freeing experience for a couple of different reasons. People aren’t worried about your style anymore and whether or not you choose to dress up or down every day is your decision. The University of Rhode Island is home to 15,000 undergraduates who all have different styles ranging from preppy and chic to comfortable and cozy.

From the freshmen boy who can’t seem to get out of bed early enough to take his pajamas off to the sophomore girl that matches her shirt perfectly to the stitching on her shoes. Not to mention the junior boy who has the same Ralph Lauren collared shirt in every color imaginable and the senior girl who’s head is spinning so fast from the night before that she’s forgotten she’s still carrying her heels and walking barefoot out of her house. URI has it all.

Don’t sweat it! Students at the University of Rhode Island are not classified according to their look or fashion sense. Although, there are a few fashion trends you’ll see among certain groups of students. From example athletes generally dress the same because of their daily schedule. If these players aren’t out on the field or in a swimming pool training, they’re probably on their way to the gym. Most athletes will dress in URI gear or their teams practice uniforms. Definitely a comfortable yet athletic look.

Another group of students that have fairly the same taste are members of Greek life. A lot of fraternity brothers can be seen in pastel colored clothes, boat shoes, and ray band sunglasses. Nothing against their fashion sense, but they all generally look the same. For some of the more athletic fraternities, they get away with sweat pants, basketball shorts, and work out t-shirt. Guys will be guys so whatever they choose to dress in, they’ll make sure to be comfortable in as well.

Ladies are not an exception to Greek life fashion trends at URI. Most sorority sisters have a Tobi dress, a pair of converse, and some sort of backless shirt in their closet. Tobi is a popular website where a lot of girls get clothing from at a reasonable price. They offer crop tops, jean shorts, dresses, and even accessories on their site. A pair of converse because let’s just face it, no girl could go through Greek week and socials without them and a backless shirt for those bar nights.

Whatever your fashion sense may be, the University of Rhode Island welcomes and encourages them all. Other students involved in organizations such as theater may use more dramatic costume designs in their style. Foreign exchanged students may come to URI and wear a traditional outfit from their culture. If there is one piece of advice I have for students trying to figure out what to wear, it’s to always check your weather app before stepping outside.
